Town offers to pay for work in exchange for school board property

SPRINGDALE, NL - The state of the parking lot at Indian River High has been a contentious issue in the town for years, and council has suggested a solution.

The lot is in disrepair; it's in need of maintenance and paving - something previous councils and school administration lobbied for in the past.

"This has come up a number of times before," said Springdale Mayor Dave Edison. "I have supported this as a councillor before."

It doesn't appear a major upgrade is on the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District (NLESD) or provincial government agendas.

Springdale council is suggesting that the town fund the paving project in exchange for some nearby land the school district owns.

"It is not our land, and the school board owns land adjacent to where we have a playground, so we would take over that land in case we wanted to do something else, and in turn we would do the paving for them," the mayor said.

"That was offered maybe back two or three years ago too."

Edison said the school hosts large events such as sports or concerts, which require considerable parking space. There is also the nearby stadium and other town recreational facilities, such as softball and soccer fields, where events are held that require substantial parking.

The mayor said the current council would likely bring the issue before the district or province within its term.
