News from the shoe - Bouquet and Brick all one day

The Department of highways has been at it every day, trying to keep roadways clear of the snow we have been plagued with; and as much as they have been doing great, they have also caused some to toss, or wickedly throw, a brick or two at them at times.

This month brought one storm right after the next, and before people or the highways can get it all cleared it seems another batch was falling. The Department of Highways sent out their loader week before last, on a Monday, actually, and whoever was driving it, sure did a wonderful job of pushing snow away from the houses and towards the pond getting it out over the roadways, but not directly on the pond. That being said, Thursday of that same week, we took yet another pounding from Old Man Winter and Mother Nature and the loader was out here clearing it off again, and another bouquet needed to be given for doing such a great job.

The plow truck must open the roads, and we all understand that when the roads have to be open, snow goes wherever, including people’s driveways. But does the driver have to pass along in a blur, going so fast, with the wing down putting snow over peoples cars and close enough to peoples house it’s scary?

That’s not all the plow truck drivers and I don’t have the name of the one who does this, but I do know there are a couple other drivers who take compassion on people’s driveways, especially after people clear them out. Now added to this, when side roads have to be plowed, snow is piled on the lower brook causing the ice to sink, making water to back up on the pond. This happened a couple weeks ago and if the water didn’t break through then there would have probably been a terrible mess in some people’s basements.

So bricks for those who grumble, ourselves included, when plow trucks don’t take to heart what people just did to get their driveways open. Bouquets for loader drivers who have been doing such great jobs of keeping snow pushed out over the road while we prepare for more snow. We also know it’s like that every winter but seems the loader has been out this year without much hassle from residents.

Shoe Cove CHY 2012 Committee plans

It’s the last of February and the Shoe Cove CHY 2014 Committee has other events ongoing and others in the planning. The Valentine wing steak dinner for two, and Valentines cake donated by Thelma was won by Loretta Gray, and the winning ticket was picked by Velma. Thank you to everyone who helped make this fundraiser a great success and especially for the donated items.

The green light has been given and it’s full steam ahead as the CHY 2014 Committee continues to look for ways to make money to offset costs with the actual come home year event. There’s going to be a Gospel Concert at the Shoe Cove Pentecostal Church March 15, 2013, beginning at 7:00 pm. Everyone is invited to come out to listen to some wonderful gospel songs of praise from some very talented local people from around the area. There is no charge at the door but there will be a Free will offering taken during the night with all proceeds going in support of the Shoe Cove CHY 2014 Committee. Please support such a worthy cause.

We have had complete satisfaction thus far from most people in the Shoe and surrounding areas so in order for us to reach our goal we will be depending on everyone who can help to help as much as possible in the next year. We all know this is a one time event in the Shoe of having a Come Home Year, so let’s all stretch out our arms, join together as one, support the committee and in the end you won’t be any worse off for it.

It should be a great time as many people will try to get home just for that event alone. I also know everyone may not be able to help every time there is an event, but help as much as you can, if you feel it’s the right thing for you to do. We don’t want to pressure people either but we feel this is a wonderful opportunity to show what our tiny niche by the sea can do when we all pull together with help from outside communities and thus far we have outstanding support no questions asked.

People may think the committee is in this for their own good but let me tell you all, this is going to be a long road ahead making sure enough money is raised and then making sure everything is in order for the actual week. I am chair over this committee but who’s to say our sons will be home, for they are not sure of anything with their jobs yet so I can’t say they will be here but I would do it all over again just to get Shoe Cove hipping and hopping with people from away.

A few other events are in the planning stages but right now that’s all I am permitted to say, just enough to keep you on your toes! But we do need your support to make this a reality. Also we need our people away to be all notified so they can plan their 2014 holidays around Come Home Year if they could come back for this special event. The actual event starts July 22 and ends July 27, or that’s how it is for now. There’s even a wedding planned for the weekend before Come Home Year starts so that’s a wonderful way to start this special once in a life time event for the Shoe.

So if you are reading this and haven’t sent a member of the CHY Committee your address, please do so as soon as possible and if you know of anyone who may not read this but once lived here, or has any connections to, the Shoe or Shoe Cove Bight or Stage Cove and even Capelin Cove for people once lived there also. Are there any people who once preached or taught in any of these communities? If so please notify a member if you too want to come for a visit. We don’t want to leave anyone out, but without your help we may do that, just not intentionally. We want everyone to be invited, at least.

As I end this off the forecast is giving us some good news, well for me at least, the sun is supposed to shine for the next week, but that is hard to believe, so by the time you read this you will know what the week had in store for us and sun or snow, just come on back soon to see what else is, New from the Shoe!

Really looking forward to coming home for this event. We would like to provide a donation if you can give us some more details on this, thanks.
