Seven teams vying for gold
It may be freezing outside but the Joe Byrne Memorial Stadium in Grand Falls-Windsor is about to heat up. Tomorrow will see the start of action in the annual Donnini’s High School Hockey Tournament.
The puck drops noon with a game between last year’s returning champs, Holy Heart of Mary High from St. John’s, and host team and last year’s silver medal winners Exploits Valley High. EVH also took the gold in the 2012 tournament.
The opening ceremonies are set for 5:30. p.m. Friday at the Joe Byrne. Play will continue throughout Friday evening and over the weekend, with the championship game at 3 p.m. on Sunday. The tournament always takes place the first week in January
In its 14 years, the Donnini’s High School Hockey Tournament has become one of the longer-running and more prestigious invitational tournaments on the island.
This year’s event will see seven teams battle for the gold medal; participating teams include Gonzaga High School and Holy Heart of Mary High School from St. John’s, Holy Spirit High School from CBS, O’Donell High School from Mount Pearl, Gander Collegiate, Pearson Academy from New-Wes-Valley, and host team Exploits Valley High from Grand Falls-Windsor.
