Valmont Academy girls soccer team of King's Point take silver and sportsmanship banner

Other recent provincial competition results from the region

KING’S POINT, NL — The Valmont Academy girls soccer team were second best at the 2A girls soccer provincials in Lawn last weekend, but they were best in sportsmanship. 

The girls from King’s Point lost in the championship game to the host Holy Name of Mary squad 6-1, taking home silver medals for their successful season on the soccer pitch. They were voted the most sportsmanship team at the tournament too, showing they can be sportsminded as well as have success on the field. 

They tied Belanger 1-1 in the round robin, but lost to St. Joseph’s All Grade of Terrenceville 2-1 and Holy Name of Mary 6-2. They defeated St. Joseph’s in the semifinal game 2-1 to earn a trip to the championship game. 

Keisha Bowers won the individual sportsmanship award for the team. 

3A boys softball 

After a pair of very tight round robin games, the Indian River High boys slo-pitch softball team were eliminated at the hands of the eventual champions in their third game of the provincial championships last weekend. 

In Glovertown, it was a 12-7 loss to Roncalli Central High of Avondale that spelled the end of the tournament for the Springdale boys. 

They had lost their opener to Pearson Academy of Wesleyville 4-3. They tied with White Hills Academy of St. Anthony at 6 in Game 2. 

Roncalli eventually won the provincial 3A banner with a 14-13 win over Templeton Academy of Meadows. 

2A boys softball 

Cape John Collegiate of La Scie suffered only one loss at the 2A boys slo-pitch softball provincials in Port Saunders last weekend, but it was a tough elimination loss in the semifinal game. 

They fell 24-21 to Long Range Academy of Cow Head, who would go on to win the provincial banner. 

They had opened the tournament with an 8-7 win over Bay D’Espoir Academy and followed that up with 14-2 win over Tricentia Academy of Arnold’s Cove. They tied French Shore Academy at 6 in their round robin finale. 

3A girls soccer 

The Indian River High girls soccer team went 0-2 at their provincial tournament held in St. Lawrence last weekend. 

The Springdale girls lost 4-1 and 2-1 to St. Lawrence Academy as they squared off in a two-team divisional round robin. St. Lawrence would lose to Mobile Central High 1-0 in the semi-final. Menihek High School of Labrador City won the provincial title with a 3-1 win over Mobile.
