Francois feeling cold shouldered by government on ferry

Christine Durnford is one of the many frustrated residents of Francois affected by lack of a ferry to the island community.

"Francois has been serviced with a helicopter since last Monday due to our ferry still on refit and Challenge One gone back to La Poile," said Durnford.

She said a helicopter would be fine if weather conditions were good, but living on the southwest coast there's a lot of fog, which means no service for community.

Last week the helicopter serviced them on Monday and no more until Saturday and Sunday with some freight brought in on the weekend and passengers got back to Burgeo.

With more fog in the forecast again this week, she suspects there will not be service again.

Residents have not received any mail since last Monday.

"The community of Francois only wanted the government to get the Gallipoli to come to Francois on Friday with freight and mail and take people out,  but we were told no," said Durnford. "How is that fair?"

The Marine Voyager hopes to be back in service late Tuesday evening or early Wednesday morning.
