Newfoundland and Labrador MP Judy Foote is taking a leave of absence.

Foote, who is a native of Grand Bank and has been in provincial and federal politics since 1996, is minister of public services and procurement in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government. She represents the riding of Bonavista-Burin-Trinity.

Trudeau issued a statement today on changes that will be made in light of Foote’s departure.

“(Foote) will be away until further notice for personal and family reasons," the statement read.

"As Parliamentarians, our family should always be our priority, and I commend her for taking the time to be with her loved ones. We look forward to having her back in Ottawa."

Natural Resources Minister Jim Carr will serve as acting minister for Foote's portfolio in her absence.
