The heat is on!

Just ask any woman who has suffered through the trials and tribulations of menopause.
These same women view it in a variety of ways.

In an attempt to show menopause from a different side, “Menopause The Musical,” the longest running comedy ever to play Las Vegas, is bringing its’ “Laugh Out Loud” tour to Newfoundland and Labrador beginning Sept. 19. It will feature an exclusive Canadian all-star cast.

“I’ve never been involved with anything in my life that brings so much joy to women each and every night,” Mark Zimmerman of Shaggypup Productions, the company that is producing the show across Canada said.
“We play everything from 3,000-seat casinos to 400-seat theatres and every night I get women thanking me, telling me they haven’t laughed this hard in years or their face hurts from laughing and smiling so much! It’s the honest truth,’’ he added.

The show, which opens at the Arts and Culture Centre in Stephenville on Sept. 19, has achieved so much early interest that second shows were added at Holy Heart Theatre in St. John’s (Sept. 27-28) and the Arts and Culture Centre performances slated for Gander (Sept. 24-25), Grand-Falls-Windsor (two shows Sept. 22) and Corner Brook (Sept. 20-21). In addition, the show will also be staged at the East Link Events Centre in Clarenville (Sept. 26).
“We’re thrilled to finally be coming to Newfoundland” Zimmerman said.

“We’ve toured in every province in Canada, but never here and we’re both excited and overwhelmed to see how much Newfoundland has embraced us,” he added.

In each of the six communities the show is being hosted, it is selling “Hot Flash fans” prior to the show with all proceeds going to a local women’s shelter in each community.

For example, in St. John’s, “Menopause” has aligned with the YWCA. In addition to the YWCA, fans will be sold in Corner Brook and Stephenville for Willow House and in Gander and Grand Falls-Windsor for Cara House.

The show centres on four women who meet at a lingerie sale. They have nothing in common except a black lace bra … and, as it turns out, memory loss, hot flashes, night sweats, not enough sex, too much sex and more.

The show’s cast, which features Janet Martin (Iowa Housewife), Sarah Strange (Earth Mother) Jayne Lewis (Soap Star) and Michelle E. White (Professional Woman) is an all-Canadian cast that all come from Toronto.

It was conceived and authored by a Jeannie Linders in Florida in 2003.

The shows outline these issues through musical parody set to the No.1 classic hits from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s.

The show was voted Entertainer Of The Year Las Vegas 2016.

“I could never do this or feel this way if this was just a play,’’ Zimmerman said.
“This show is so powerful in the sheer joy and message it delivers," he added.

Zimmerman had optioned a New York comedy show to produce in Toronto and the rights holders literally talked me out of it and talked me into producing their show “Menopause The Musical” in Toronto, which he did.

“We opened in June 2006 and ran for 513 consecutive shows until 2008. My production company, Shaggypup Productions, has been touring ‘Menopause’ all across Canada since 2014. We’ve virtually been to every province except Newfoundland, so it was high time we came and paid the province a visit. The response there has been heartwarming,” he said.
