Local author Joel Thomas Hynes has won one of the country's most prestigious literary awards with his latest novel.

Hynes was named winner of the 2017 Governor General's Literary Awards in English fiction for "We'll All Be Burnt in Our Beds Some Night," earning a $25,000 prize.

The jury described the book as "hilarious yet disturbing," "an act of full-throttle imagination and narrative invention" and "unforgettable, tragic and ultimately transcendent."

The novel was also shortlisted for this year's Scotiabank Giller Prize.

In addition to a novelist, Hynes is a musician, and actor and a playwright. His previous books include "Down to the Dirt," which was adapted into a movie, and he's currently working on "Little Dog," a CBC TV comedy about a boxer looking for redemption after walking out on a championship match. Hynes is star and co-creator (along with Sherry White) of the show, which will air next year.
