The presence of Norwalk like illness in the community has prompted Central Health to implement limited visitation restrictions at Valley Vista Senior Citizen's Home and Green Bay Health Centre in Springdale.

'Doc, I can't sleep...'

A common concern of many people is difficulty sleeping, or insomnia. 10 per cent of adults will have long-term insomnia. Insomnia isn't based upon the number of hours you sleep but includes difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or unrefreshing sleep. This may affect functioning during the day.

Symptoms of Insomnia

Common symptoms include difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, daytime fatigue, forgetfulness, irritability, depression, low energy, or poor concentration. Many will notice a lack of sleep is affecting their job performance or they are having more accidents.

Shortly after 7 p.m. on Feb. 3, residents of Baie Verte noticed flames coming from the fire detachment.

At approcimately 7:10 p.m. the Baie Verte RCMP detachment were dispatched to investigate the blaze.

Director of education says asbestos is removed from Copper Mountain Academy construction site

Director of education for the Nova Central School District says asbestos discovered in the ground of the construction site of Copper Mountain Academy has been cleaned up.

"They are moving ahead now with site preparation," said Cindy Fleet, director of education.

It was before Christmas when workers identified asbestos in the ground where the new K-12 school is being built in Baie Verte.

High school student hopes to use title to fundraise for Haiti relief

Taylor Vincent has been thinking hard and long about what she may do if crowned this year's Miss Teen NL.

The Springdale youth is among 32 young women from across the province who are competing for the title, including contestants Emily Hamilton of Springdale and Cassidy Paxton from South Brook. If the 14-year-old wins the pageant, she hopes to use the travel opportunities that come with the honour to promote relief for Haiti.

For Tiffany George of Springdale it is all about giving back.

The six-year-old has been working hard to raise money for a cause that means a lot to her.

Since January 25, Tiffany has been collecting money for the Canadian Red Cross Haiti relief fund.

"I thought it would be nice for Haiti so they could buy food," said the six-year-old.

RCMP investigating suspicious fire Post a comment 

A fire that destroyed a shed in Rattling Brook is being looked into closely by the Springdale RCMP detachment.

Const. Mike MacKay said the matter is being treated as arson.

The shed was located near the main wharf in Rattling Brook.

He said a call came in regarding the fire during the early morning hours of January 28.

Valmont Academy student inspired by speaker

Dr. TA Loeffler knows what it takes to pursue a dream and reach extraordinary heights.

The St. John's native has climbed five of the Seven Summits - the highest peaks in each of the seven continents, and is planning to conquer the remaining two as well; Mount Vinson and then Mount Everest, which is her ultimate goal.

The renowned speaker is a professor of Outdoor Recreation at Memorial University. She has received international awards and recognition for her work. She visited Springdale on January 26, and spoke about her journeys to roughly 200 spectators at the Indian River High School lecture theatre. Her theme was "Drawing Inspiration from New Edges."
