Taking lessons from the past

GANDER, NL – Central students had the chance to dig into their past at the 21st annual Regional Heritage Fair in Gander April 13.

Hosted by the Newfoundland and Labrador Historic Sites Association, in partnership with the provincial government, this year’s theme, "Lessons from Our Past, Shaping Our Future" had more than 35 students from the central region take part.

Research projects ranged from family histories and war veterans, to cultural and economic drivers such as mummering and the cod fishery.

With a family interest in carpentry spanning generations, Lewisporte Academy student Patrick Scammell compared tools of the trade from his grandfather’s time to present.

The Grade 5 student looked into items such as homemade hand planes for shaping wood to modern day electric drills.

Having a keen interest in carpentry, having made coffee tables, chairs and boats previously, Patrick discovered newer isn’t always better.

“The older stuff took longer and it took more work, but it made fine products,” he said. “The new tools are quicker and easier, but it doesn’t always produce as fine of work.”

As a result of his findings, Patrick said he will place more focus on the tools of past to improve his craftsmanship.

Lewisporte Academy Grade 5 students Andrew Simms, left, researched the cod fishery, and Jayden Hanrahan, focused on schooners for their heritage projects.

Botwood Memorial Academy students Pyper Penney and Jayden Hanrahan, presented “Our native history” looking into the past of the Mi’kmaq.

Pyper has Mi’kmaq status and the two reached out to relatives to discover more about the Grade 5 student’s roots.

Pyper and Hanrahan became really interested in the language of the aboriginal group and say they will continue to explore the culture beyond their heritage project.

“I’ve already been talking to my aunt about speaking the language and drumming lessons,” Pyper said.
