Copper Ridge Academy came out on top of a field of three high school girls basketball teams from the Green Bay and White Bay areas and punched their ticket to the 2A provincial.

For many girls, it was their first games of organized basketball. The tournament was hosted by Indian River High last weekend.

In the opener it was the host school narrowly defeating Dorset Collegiate 16-13. The eventual champions looked strong in their first game, beating the Pilley’s Island girls 32-14. However, it was the Springdale girls who finished the round robin undefeated, downing Copper Ridge 32-23 in their first encounter.

The top two teams would meet again in the championship game, with the berth to the 2A provincial in New World Island on the line. Indian River High looked strong again in the early going, holding an 11-4 lead at the half. However, the Baie Verte team turned things around in the second half and came out on the winning end of a 26-21 final.

Madison Northcott won the sportsmanship award for Copper Ridge Academy.
