LABRADOR CITY, N.L. – The Town of Labrador City is once again encouraging homeowners to take pride in their properties and is offering a small weekly prize to the home chosen as Property of the Week.

Municipal enforcement officer Marcie Brown said this is the town’s third year offering the awards program.

This year, she said, resident property awards will be given out weekly from June 16 to Aug. 31.

“We try to recognize people in the community that are taking pride in their properties, so that they are eye-pleasing when you drive or walk by,” Brown said during a phone interview on June 19.

The intent is not to have homeowners invest in plants, shrubs or trees, rather is more about keeping the property well maintained with clean yards and tidy fences, where applicable.

In order to qualify for the award, Brown said, the property’s street civic number must be clearly visible and all property taxes up-to-date.

“And, when we recognize a property owner we like to give them a small gift in recognition of all the work they are doing.”

Although the contest has only been up and running for a week, Brown said, there is much interest in the awards program.

“We always go to the homeowner and let them know they’ve been picked for the property of the week. They have the choice to say yes or no but we’ve never had anybody turn us down.”

Once the accolade is accepted, a sign is placed on the property to let everyone know it’s been chosen as the property of the week.

“Then we take a picture of their property and post it on our Facebook page. We keep a tally of all the homes that have won (the award). So if you have won in a previous year, we try not to give you the award another year,” Brown said.

The town will also be offering weekly tips on Facebook on timely topics such as fencing, decks, backyard, sheds, playhouses and walkways.

While the awards program is currently offered for residential properties, the town will also hold a similar program Sept. 7-21 for commercial properties.

“It takes a little extra time if you have a bigger property to maintain so this will give business (owners) a little more time if they are planning on doing some work on their properties,” Brown said.
