BAIE VERTE, NL — The annual Spree by the Sea is under way in Baie Verte.
The five-day event kicked off Wednesday with a free swim at Centennial Pool followed by a giant stadium bingo and a free kiddie movie night with the feature “Smurfs: The Lost Village.”
Today’s festivities include Pack the Back (Rescue Vehicle) from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at grocery stre areas, where food bank items are being collected. There is a preteen stadium dance from 7-9 p.m.
Friday’s list of activities include another free swim from 5:45-6:30 p.m. followed by a Giant Slip-N-Slide from 6:30-7:30 p.m. There will be family fires beginning at 8 p.m. and fireworks at 10 p.m. taking place at the empty lot next to Cohen’s.
Saturday’s festivities include the Wade Drover Memorial Fish Derby, which takes place from 8 a.m.- 8 p.m. with first, second and third place prizes for the longest catch of the day. There is also a breakfast at the Trinity Pentecostal Church.
The Spree Day Events from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. include opening ceremonies at 11 a.m., the best decorated bike/stroller at 11:30 a.m., and best decorated pet contest at noon. Games of chance start at 11:30 a.m. and there will also be horseback rides, a bouncy castle, battle balls, face painting, food vendors, dunk tank, and a mock jail.
There will be live local entertainment from noon-2 p.m., a cake walk at 1 p.m, the hula hoop contest at 1:45 p.m., Davey Gravey will take the stage from 2-3 p.m., and the root beer chug contest takes place at 3 p.m. There will also be a tug-of-war competition and a ladder ball tournament.
The annual stadium dance, featuring live entertainment by Dave McHugh, will be Saturday starting at 10 p.m.
The Baie Verte Dolphins Invitational Swim Meet will take place Sunday.There will also be a gospel concert at the Trinity Pentecostal Church starting at 6:30 p.m.
Participants are asked to bring a non-perishable food item to all events that have no admission cost.
