Defeats Nichols in Saturday final

For the seventh time in the last decade, a rink skipped by Heather Strong will represent Newfoundland and Labrador at the national women’s curling championship.

Strong and her Bally Haly Golf and Curling club team of third Laura Strong, second Jessica Cunningham and lead Kathryn Cooper won the provincial Scotties Tournament of Hearts Saturday at the Re/Max Centre (St. John’s Curling Club) with an 10-3 win over Shelley Nichols RE/Max Centre entry.

Strong stole the last seven points in the victory.

It’s the 11th provincial crown — all as skip — for Heather Strong, who previously won from 1998 to 2001, from 2005 to 2009 and in 2012. Laura Strong, her sister, has been on the last eight of those winners.

Geoff Cunningham is the team’s coach.

Nichols, the 2010 provincial champ, and her team of third Michelle Jewer, second Kelli Turpin and lead Rhonda Whalen had finished tied with the Strong rink at the end of the preliminary round-robin, each with 3-1 record.

That was after Strong’s 6-5 extra-end Friday night in the last preliminary-round game, one which was decided by a stolen point.

Had Nichols won that game, she would have needed to be defeated twice in the playoff to be denied the title since she would have been undefeated in the five team round-robin, while Strong would have been required to play a tie-breaker against Beth Hamilton (2-2) of Bally Haly.

As it was, Strong’s win Friday meant there would be just one-game final, which saw Nicholls take a 3-1 lead after three ends. But Strong scored twice in the fourth to tie it 3-3, and after a couple of blank ends, proceeded to steal one in the seventh and three more in both the eighth and ninth, leading to game-ending handshakes.

The result means the Strong rink will represent Newfoundland at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts Canadian championship in Montreal Feb. 1-9.
