The Eastern Canadian Division Gaelic Athletic Association Championships will be decided in St. John’s Saturday.
There are over 200 athletes competing in the events. Hurling teams include the Nova Scotia Halifax Gaels, Montreal Shamrocks, St. John’s Avalon Harps and Hurling Selects.
The Gaelic football teams include Les Patriotes de Quebec, St. John’s Avalon Harps, Ottawa Gaels and Montreal Shamrocks.
Competition begins at 9 a.m. and runs throughout the day, alternating between hurling and football matches.
The hurling final is scheduled for 5 p.m., while the football final will follow that match at Swilers Complex.
The presentation dinner is set for 7:30 p.m. at Swilers clubhouse, while a social is scheduled for Bridie Molloy’s Pub on George Street at 10 p.m.
Walk-off win for Bay Roberts on Byrne’s homer
Daniel Byrne hit a walk-off, three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning Bay Roberts Coors Light a 5-3 win over Rob Roy in Molson St. John’s intermediate softball Tuesday night at Lion’s Park.
Meanwhile, Game On Gear was awarded a 7-0 default win when Lafontaine Club Molson was unable to field a team.
In Bay Roberts’ victory, Johnny Doyle picked up the pitching win on a five-hitter with a dozen strikeouts.
Joel Whelan took the loss on five hits with five strikeouts.
Andrew Gale of Rob Roy was the game’s top batter with two hits in three at bats.
Fifield, Shammies whitewash Feildians
Josh Fifield tossed a two-hit shutout with five strikeouts as Shamrocks defeated Feildians 4-0 in St. John’s Molson intermediate softball Tuesday night at St. Pat’s Ball Park.
Matt Murphy (2IP, 3W, 2K) pitched in relief.
Dave Edwards (5IP, 2R, 5H, 2W, 3K) took the loss. James Locke (1IP, 2R, 1H, 1W, 1K) finished up.
Zach Fitzpatrick hit two doubles for the winners.
