Osmond secures berth at next month’s Olympics in Russia

Kaetlyn Osmond is headed to Sochi for next month’s Winter Olympics.

Marystown native Kaetlyn Osmond won her consecutive Canadian figure skating title Saturday, earning a berth at next month’s Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia in the process.

The Marystown native won her second consecutive Canadian women's figure skating title in Ottawa Saturday and was officially named to the figure skating squad that will represent the country in Russia Sunday.

The 18-year-old, who now lives and trains in Sherwood Park, Alta., lead after her short program on Friday before scoring 207.2 in her free skate the following day, a routine that included six triple jumps.

The score represented the second highest in the event’s history, trailing only Joannie Rochette, who scored of 208.23, before the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

Osmond overcame two significant injuries in recent month’s that threatened to derail her Olympic ambitions – a stress reaction in her ankle in August and a hamstring tear in October.

Osmond was ecstatic with the victory and Olympic berth.

“When I was little I always imagined what it must be like to go to the Olympic Games. Now I am going for sure and I’ve never felt so proud knowing I will represent Canada in Russia. I can’t wait to skate for all Canadians on the Olympic ice.”

Sunday, Skate Canada announced the Canadian skating team for Sochi 2014. With 17 skaters, Canada has qualified the largest figure skating team of any country for Sochi 2014 – three men, two ladies, three pairs and three ice dance.

Great Showing Kaetlyn! Good luck in Sochi! Darrell, our Government can't give money in support of an Athlete that is not a resident of the province and hasn't been for years. It just doesn't work that way. It's up the the Alberta Government to do this. Just saying. Again, Kaetlyn, great job and do us and all of Canada proud in Sochi!

And to think this talented athlete has done so much for this province and received not a penny from our government is absolutely terrible. Mr. Jackman and Mr. King, while you are pretending to be supporters of her, where is the money? My skating club is embarrassed by our government.
