The Towns of Burin and Marystown have received requests from Targa Newfoundland to renew their agreements to continue its Road Race through the towns.
The event has been ongoing for 12 years, continuously in Marystown but only resumed last year in Burin after being interrupted for several years due to dissatisfaction on behalf of the town.
A one-year agreement to resume the racing in Burin was negotiated last year to resume the event. Now Targa Newfoundland organizers have request a four-year agreement, however some councillors have expressed concern about the length.
A decision this month decided to defer the request to the Planning and Development for further review.
In Marystown, a number of the recently elected councillors indicated they had received feedback from residents concerning the closure of roads and other safety issues. They wanted to discuss the new request among themselves and also to schedule a public meeting for residents to have their say.
Council agreed to meet with Targa organizers during its second meeting in January month (around Jan. 21, 2014) to hear their presentation related to the four-year term. Councillors will follow up residents’ concerns after hearing the presentation.
