The Leg Rock franchise

Dear Editor,

Do you know where about $250,000 of your hard earned tax money went to last year?

Tim Horton’s at the Health Science Center.

No, I am not kidding and I am not on drugs – except for caffeine. What I heard coming across the airways this afternoon not only shocked me, but also almost made me throw up my most recent dose of Timmies Coffee.

No, no, don’t blame it on Tim or his coffee crazed staff, and don’t blame it on the union workers from the Health Science Center. Put the blame on the lady being paid $250,000 a year (plus bonuses) to make sure that Tim Horton’s Health Science Franchise is not losing the amount of her salary a year.

I am sure you could put a Tim Horton’s out on Leg Rock in the middle of Green Bay and it would make a profit. With the food fishery coming up in early summer they would clean her with every boat in the bay mooring up at its dock craving for Tim’s magic beverage.

Why do you wonder Tim Horton’s, under the supervision of Eastern Health, could not do what I am sure the Leg Rock’s Tim Horton could, and that’s make a profit? It’s because, in their infinite wisdom, they decided to pay union workers $28.00 per hour to prepare your daily double double. In the meantime, the franchise out in Paradise is raking in thousands because the worker staring at you behind the coffee counter is, for the most part, getting maybe $11.50 per hour.

If this profit making franchise falls on hard times tomorrow and goes ‘tits up in the tattie garden’ it doesn’t really bother me.

I would have sympathy for the displaced workers, but none of my money was used to run this establishment. As for the franchise at Newfoundland’s own Hospital, well, that’s my money being used to keep that afloat, and, can you believe, it took Eastern Health’s CEO four years or so to figure out that maybe we should privatize the money losing Tim’s that is now on life support?

I tell ya, I’d rather jump in Hughie’s punt and row out to Leg Rock for my coffee – at least they wouldn’t be using my money and, most likely, it is going stay afloat!!
