Looking in the mirror

Dear Editor

Dear Editor,

It has become obvious that safety on our highways will only happen with increased law enforcement. The number of idiots now behind steering wheels seems to have greatly increased. We witness this much more often than we see moose.

We all too often are very quick to identify our misfortune as caused by neglect on the part of others, in particular government. Yet, we exceed the posted highway speed limits for prime conditions. (Some people, extremely.)

We ignore advice to reduce speeds because of wet or icy roads.

We have too many driving while under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

We drive with phones to our ear or, worse probably, texting.

We ignore advice to reduce speeds at night because of possible moose.

Reduced speed, especially at night, on slippery or wet highways, and refraining from driving under the influence would reduce most vehicle accidents and reduce moose/vehicle accidents by probably 85 per cent.

Increased highway enforcement with the assistance of highway traffic cameras should prove effective.

Accidents that then happen would be accidents. To avoid such, you must stay in bed. Even then, there are no assurances.
