The RNC has called for support from Halifax after the discovery of an unidentified device — described as “military ordnance” — at the St. Philip’s marina.

RNC Const. Steve Curnew said around 7 p.m. Monday night, the police force was called after the device was found in the water. The RNC’s explosives disposal unit, along with other officers, went to investigate.

“Because it’s underwater, we’re limited in what we can do,” Curnew said. “We’ve contacted the Canadian Forces Atlantic Fleet Diving Unit out of Halifax, and they’re going to send additional resources to provide assistance to the RNC.”

Curnew said the scene has been cordoned off and will remain secured overnight. He added there is no danger to the public.

“Even if this thing were to go off, where it’s underwater it would just cause a big splash,” he said.

Support from Halifax is expected to arrive the morning.

EARLIER STORY:

The RNC’s explosives disposal unit (EDU) is on the job at the St. Philip’s marina after a device was found this evening in the water.

RNC Const. Steve Curnew spoke with The Telegram as police worked on the scene, and dispelled a rumour that a body had been discovered in the area.

“Previous word was that there was a body located down in Portugal Cove,” he said. “That’s not the case. We do have some type of device that has been located in the water.”

Curnew was unable to comment on the type of device that was found, but said the explosives unit would inform him when further information was available. He said if there is any danger to the public, police will issue a statement.

What does aircraft flying above your house have to do with a grenade in the water? Are you somehow desperate to make a connection there?
