The Town of Springdale will play host to the 2014 Central NL Regional Games, this year, an event that will see some of the region’s best athletes compete in various sports.

All the action starts on Monday with the opening ceremonies at 8 a.m. in Springdale Stadium, and go on for three days, ending with the closing ceremonies on Wednesday.

Jason Sparkes, recreation director for the town, says the event will see teams compete from Springdale, Grand Falls-Windsor, Bishop’s Falls and Botwood in sports ranging from basketball, volleyball, soccer, softball and hockey. Sports are broken up into male and female categories with different age brackets.

“It’s all about helping to encourage people to stay active, and participating in sports at the grassroots level – right in their own communities,” said Sparkes. “It’s great for the participants, and it’s great for the town to host this.”

Monday will host Girls 16 and under ball hockey, with the championship game at 3 p.m.; boys 13 and under basketball and volleyball, with championships at 4 p.m. and 5 p.m.; and boys 16 and under soccer and softball with championships at 4 p.m. and 5 p.m.
