COMFORT COVE-NEWSTEAD — With the removal of a communications tower from the Loran C site, which had been operated by the Federal Government up until a few years ago, the area still has a lot of useable land and a building located at that site.

Comfort Cove-Newstead Mayor Randy White feels that area could be put to good use. It was about three years ago that he began the process of approaching the Federal Government and the department responsible for disposal of their properties.

“I made it known, if they ever came to a point of disposing of that asset that there was interest in it from Comfort Cove-Newstead,” he said.

In his opinion White said it would be a great place for a Town depot or even a regional facility.

“I have been brainstorming with others the idea of discussing with outlying communities such as Campbellton, Loon Bay and Birchy Bay if there is any interest in a regional fire department facility or training facility that could be located at that site,” he said. “I would have absolutely no objection if this could benefit other communities in the area  — I would be wholeheartedly behind that. If the Town of Comfort Cove-Newstead is successful in acquiring this major facility, then we sit down with representatives from other communities and say this is what we have, let’s work together to make it good for all of us.”

White hopes the decision from the Federal Government will come sooner rather than later. His understanding is that the property will be offered to the Provincial Government and if they don’t want it then it could come into the possession of the Town of Comfort Cove-Newstead.
