Flyers meeting this weekend to assess reaction to Yetman signing

It’s been more than two weeks since the Gander Flyers signed convicted sex offender Mark Yetman to man the net for the upcoming Central-West Senior Hockey League season.

Since that time, the Gander Women’s Centre has spoken publicly through various media outlets about how it feels about the signing. There’s also been community reaction through social media.

Flyers’ general manager Garry White, who signed Yetman earlier this month, said he’s disappointed in the response to the signing.

“Obviously, I’m disappointed in how people are perceiving our signing,” he said. “We’re approaching this as a hockey decision…nothing more or nothing less.”

He said he’s also upset regarding some of the facts being circulated through social media, which he says are not entirely filled with completely true facts.

White said the Flyers had an opportunity to sign Yetman during the 2012-13 Newfoundland Senior Hockey League season, but at the time Yetman’s trial was still before the courts.

“It was before the courts and we didn’t know what was involved, so we took it on as an organization to say ‘this is not the right time’,” he said. “But now we deemed it was.

“Probably, the fool I am, I believe, trust and abide by the judicial system of Canada, and after it was handled by the courts in the proper manner, that’s when I made my decision. Before it wasn’t handled and before it didn’t come to a conclusion, we chose not to do that.”

White told The Beacon Thursday, he has talked to Yetman about the media coverage his signing has stirred up, and said the goaltender is somewhat upset about it.

“He posted on Facebook that he was excited to play in Gander, and he heard there was support in Gander and good fan support. He was excited to have this as part of his hockey career,” said White. “The thing right now is Mark is in New Brunswick representing Newfoundland and Labrador at a national ball hockey tournament, so not everyone has him chastised.”

The Flyers’ executive met over the weekend, and the Yetman signing was among its discussions.

White told The Beacon on Monday, the organization is looking at the situation in a couple of different ways, and was not ready to discuss the matter any further at that time.

A lot can be said, is Mark Yetman sincerely sorry for what he did? Has he learned anything from this terrible mistake? Does he get it when a woman says no it means no and he must show respect and listen to what she says? If the answer is a sincere yes to all three then give him a 2nd chance to prove that he has changed and has learned from his mistakes. I don't know all of the details but if the courts never made him get any professional emotional help for what he did then that was a mistake and I hope that Mark will realize it himself that it would be a good idea even now that he do this on his own and talk to a medical professional of mental health or at least a spiritual advisor for some kind of guidence, someone to talk with. I think the courts should also be giving more consideration to adding things like this of mandatory medical professional mental health help more often to get to the root of the problems.

I'm unsure why Gary would be disappointed; the guy signed a registered sex offender? I for one am all for second chances and mark is getting one here in Gander. But to be disappointed in thenreaction he is getting should come as shock to no one.

A great signing by the Flyers. A proven net-minder who made a mistake, and deserves a 2nd chance, he won't be the 1st and won't be the last to have made a mistake. Type of goalie who can lead the Flyers to the Herder. GO FLYERS GO and welcome to Gander Mark Yetman. I know you will serve the Flyers and Gander well. Sure hope the team doesn't change their mind on having him on the team.

He sexually assaulted 3 women and got 3 years in jail, when he goes to jail he will get what those 3 women didn't ask for.
