“I have to do something to keep the devil out of my mind,” said Reverend Ray Brett with a twinkle in his eye.

The Irene Joan was just a hull when it was salvaged. It is now on display at the Long Point Lighthouse.

“I have to do something to keep the devil out of my mind,” said Reverend Ray Brett with a twinkle in his eye.

He was referring to his hobby of model boat building that keeps him busy during the long winter hours. The retired Anglican Minister started building models during the winter of 2010. His first attempt was a matchstick aircraft that now hangs in his living room over the piano.

After successful completion of his first endeavour he decided to move onto creating a Joe Batt's Arm bully boat.

“It was a fall fishing boat,” Brett explains. “They were a larger boat, typically about 32 to 35 feet in length with a cuddy in the forecastle.

“They would be out for three or four days fishing around the Little Fogo Island and the Offer Grounds. My father had one and so I decided to build a model from my recollection of what the boat looked like. We left Joe Batt's Arm when I was around seven-years-old in 1939 and moved to Comfort Cove. My father then used the boat to go up into Gander Bay to get trees that would be used for fuel.
