Your experience as a Telegram reader will soon be even better — The Telegram is refurbishing its printing press.

TC Media is making a significant investment in the paper’s printing plant, upgrading press components and introducing new technologies to improve overall quality and efficiency.

The refurbishment of the 35-year-old press will allow for greater automation in the printing process, as well as increased flexibility.

The Telegram's printing press also prints six of TC Media's 11 weekly publications.

One of the biggest changes readers will notice in The Telegram and the weeklies is higher-quality colour, through the introduction of a process colour model.

“Over the years, we have changed our business quite a bit,” said Ian Kirby, director of manufacturing for Atlantic Canada and Saskatchewan at TC Media.

“Thirty-five years ago, process colour wasn't in big high demand. Today, it’s the thing. Everybody wants good process colour pictures and our advertisers want good process colour.”

Kirby said the investment in the press is significant — not only in dollars, but also in time and resources.

“We think it’s a very positive thing, not only for our readers and our advertisers, but today in our marketplace it shows a confidence in the print portion of our business, that it’s still strong and it’s still healthy.”

The refurbishments will take between five and six months; currently, half of the printing press is being dismantled.

Although the paper will be printing on limited capabilities during this time, readers should not notice any difference in paper quality.
