Three inmates suspected of being involved in a serious assault against another inmate at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary (HMP) Sunday appeared in provincial court Monday.
David Wayne Murray, Brian Thomas Grech and James Douglas Glasco were led into Courtroom No. 7 one by one.

Duty counsel Jane Fitzpatrick and Crown prosecutor Jason House agreed to postpone the case until Friday.

The three men face charges of aggravated assault and assault with a weapon. Grech and Glasco are also charged with breaching court orders.

Police responded to a report of a serious assault at the prison at 2:45 p.m. Sunday.

According to court documents, the weapon that was reportedly used was a broken broom handle.

It’s the second time this year Grech has been charged with assaulting another inmate. He’s also suspected of being a part of a violent attack on Kenny Green, who was in custody facing second-degree murder charges at the time.

It happened Feb. 9 in the HMP chapel, where several inmates had gathered for the weekly Sunday service. Some of them were said to have carried out a planned assault on Green using homemade weapons, including sections of the chapel’s pew.

Some of the prisoners involved in the altercation were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, which were believed to be lacerations and stab wounds. Green was not seriously injured.

In April, Green pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to a six-year jail term. With credit for time served, it left about 4 1/2 years on his term. He was transported out of the province to an undisclosed federal prison last week.

There was another incident on Feb. 20, when several other prisoners were said to have gone on a rampage and wrecked parts of a unit at the prison. They’ve been charged with mischief causing damage to property.
