Project underway to identify military personnel in photos

A unique project is underway at the Royal Canadian Legion in Bay Roberts to determine the identity of more than a dozen military personnel featured in photographs at the branch.

The project is being spearheaded by the Bay Roberts Heritage Society, with support from the Legion.

The unidentified images — more than a dozen in all — have been scanned into a digital format, and research is underway in an attempt to gather information on each image.

The effort is part of a larger project to record the identities of all residents of the municipality of Bay Roberts who have served in past conflicts, including the First World War, Second World War and the Korean Conflict, explained Eric Jerrett, chairman of the heritage society. Jerrett is also co-chair of the town's War Memorial Restoration Committee, which has overseen a significant upgrade to the memorial in recent years, with more upgrades and enhancements in the offing.

There are plans to inscribe these names on a plaque that will eventually be displayed at the war memorial.

The unidentified photos, meanwhile, are featured in the military exhibit at the Legion museum.

Jerrett said the task has been made harder by the fact that some residents of the community enlisted with militaries in the United States, Canada (pre-Confederation) and Great Britain.

"An example of this would be my late neighbour, George Warford, from Port de Grave, who was working in New York and joined the (United States Air Force)," Jerrett explained. "His name does not appear in any of the Newfoundland, Canadian or British records, but he saw conflict in the Second World War."

The project coincides with the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War.
