Flag at half-mast at local RCMP detachment

The RCMP detachment in Clarenville is flying their flag at half-mast today in memory of the officers who were killed in a shooting in Moncton, NB, yesterday.

The Canadian flag at the RCMP detachment in Clarenville is being flown at half-mast to honour the officers who died in the Moncton shooting.

The suspect is 24-year-old Justin Bourque who allegedly shot five police officers, killing three and wounding the other two. There is currently a manhunt ongoing and, according to the most recent information, he was spotted Thursday morning but the RCMP were unable to apprehend him.

The area of Moncton where the shooting occurred is currently under lockdown and police are advising the public in this zone to stay inside and lock their doors.

Staff Sgt. Bill Dwyer of the Clarenville RCMP detachment told The Packet Thursday afternoon that this tragedy is affecting many people across the country.

“Everybody is certainly feeling the loss,” he said. “I think all RCMP are feeling the loss because we are all part of the big family.”

Dwyer also said local people in this detachment know some of the officers who were involved in the shooting.

“Some of the members here know, personally, some of the people who have been injured, or killed, so it’s hard for everybody.”
