Mary Picco learned of lottery win checking email

When Mary Picco of Mount Pearl received an email telling her there were five additional $1-million prizes available to win in an upcoming Lotto 6/49 draw, she decided to buy an extra ticket, giving her two for the March 8 draw.
That decision appears to have paid off for her and her husband, Wayne Picco. On Tuesday, Atlantic Lottery presented the couple with a $1-million cheque.

Mary learned the morning after she purchased that second ticket there was a winning ticket sold online for a $1-million prize.

“I came off and I thought, I know it’s not me. It’s never us. But anyhow, I said, ‘I’ll check my Hotmail,’ because every time I win $2, I always get an email telling me I won. So I went into my Hotmail account, and when I went in, it said, ‘Congratulations Mary, you’ve won big. Check your online account to see how much.’”

After reading those words, Mary chose to step away from the computer for a spell and sit down. She was fairly certain the million-dollar prize was hers to claim, but she could not bring herself to immediately confirm that news.

Wayne was downstairs. He too had learned there was an online winner.

“She came down over the stairs, and she had this different kind of look on her,” explained Wayne. “She said, ‘I think we’ve won.’ I said, ‘Are you serious?’”

Mary and Wayne both went to the computer to see what her account said. It confirmed her ticket was worth $1 million.

Her nursing career will not come to an immediate end because of the lottery win, though she said she will likely retire a year earlier than previously planned.

“We plan to share some of the money with our family, and we’re going to do some house renovations,” she said, adding the couple has also discussed taking a trip to Rome.

This win was not the first one for Mary Picco. She once shared an $8,000 Lotto Max prize with her sisters.

“We were really happy with that,” she laughed.

While this lottery win is substantial in comparison, Mary does not expect its effect on the couple’s lifestyle will be too dramatic.

“Not at all.”
