On the eve of Kaetlyn Osmond's skate at the 2014 Sochi Olympics in Russia, her family and community supporters responded to the Marystown Town Council call for a group to send a ‘town greeting’ of support.

Some 60-70 Marystown residents showed up at the Marystown Council Chambers Tuesday night to send a ‘town greeting’ to Russia and two-time Canadian Women’s Figure Skating champion/Olympian Kaetlyn Osmond. Councillors decorated the chambers at the Municipal Centre and invited residents to join them Tuesday night for a cake cutting and video message taping to be sent off to Kaetlyn in Russia.

Enthusiastic residents dressed in Canada’s red colors to display their backing of the 18-year-old Kaetlyn, who still considers Marystown and Newfoundland and Labrador her home.

Education Minister/Burin-Placentia West MHA Clyde Jackman joined council’s celebration to offer his own support.

“The department will roll out its own program, ‘Follow Kaetlyn’s Journey’, this week with a link on her website. You’ll be able to follow her through the Olympics (Feb. 6-23).

“I’m hoping the entire province will follow her and wish her best of luck.”

This Saturday, Feb. 8, at 12 noon residents will be able to watch Kaetlyn’s first skate in the Team competition on a large TV screen at St. Gabriel’s Hall in Marystown.

Deputy-Mayor Al Spencer, who chaired the town’s event, thanked council for its support, especially Special Events Committee chair Coun. Darlene Lafosse-Blagdon and co-chair Coun. Mary Beth Farrell and town staff.

“I’m hoping we can grow on our community support (through similar events).”
