A news release notes that, within the next few weeks, Canadian Blood Services needs to fill approximately 19,000 donation appointments nationally — including more than 170 appointments in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Canadian Blood Services is asking shoppers looking for Boxing Day specials to take an hour to give blood that will help patients finding themselves in hospital.

While there is a continuous need for all blood types, there is a current need for donors with O-negative blood. When someone’s life is on the line and there’s no time to check blood type, hospital patients can receive O-negative blood.

“Blood is perishable, especially platelets which are part of blood. Platelets have a shelf life of just five days,” says Community Development Co-ordinator Gordon Skiffington.

“That means giving blood immediately before or after holidays, like Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, is critical at this time of year.

“We need community members to rally around patients this holiday season and help make miracles come true.”

The St. John's Holiday Miracle Blood Donor Clinic will run Friday from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. Scotia Centre is located at 245 Water St. in St. John’s.

Call 1-888-2-Donate (1-888-236-6283) or go online at www.blood.ca to book an appointment to donate blood.

Share your holiday miracle story on Canadian Blood Services’ Facebook page: www.facebook.com/NLBlood and on Twitter #giveamiracle.

People can also have their company or organization “Adopt a Recipient” and as a group make the number of donations that one anonymous person will need. For example, it can take eight donations a week to treat one person with leukemia.
