“We want to improve the quality of life in NunatuKavut and give our members the power to shape what those improvements will be,” NCC president Todd Russell said in a news release.

Non-profit and community organizations within NunatuKavut can apply for a maximum of $2,500 for programs, events, festivals and other initiatives that meet the criteria.

“We recognize the tireless work and endless commitment that our members put in to make sure their communities are healthy, strong communities – most times with very little resources.” Russell said. “We wanted to help our members as they are the experts on what is needed in their communities.”

The program is called The George Roberts Community Grants Program, named after the late, George Roberts, a member of the NCC from Norman Bay.

“George Roberts was a man whose heart and soul was in doing good for his community and all of Labrador. George was such a persistent and respectful advocate and we are proud to honour him by naming these grants in his memory,” Russell said.

The NCC unveiled the pilot project at its annual general assembly in November and is releasing the guidelines and application on its website today at

The grant program is made possible with contributions from the NunatuKavut Community Council, NDC Fisheries Limited and NCC mining partners — Labrador Iron Mines, Tata Steel Minerals Canada, Search Minerals and Alderon Iron Ore Corp.
