UPDATE: Winds causing cancellations in western Newfoundland

The Blue Puttees has reached port in Port aux Basques, Marine Atlantic reports.

CORNER BROOK  While high winds and heavy seas were preventing the Blue Puttees from docking in Port aux Basques this morning, it is expected to dock early this afternoon.

The Marine Atlantic ferry scheduled to arrive in Newfoundland from Nova Scotia this morning was in an offshore holding pattern waiting out the weather. Crossings from both Newfoundland and Nova Scotia scheduled for this morning and tonight have all been cancelled.

Schools all along the Northern Peninsula and Labrador were closed this morning, with further announcements pending.

Schools in Hampden, Flower's Cove, Cook's Harbour, L'Anse au Loup, Plum Point, and Port Saunders are closed for the rest of the day.

Other schools impacted are James Cook Memorial in Cook’s Harbour, H.G. Fillier Academy in Englee, Truman Eddison Memorial in Griquet, Mary Simms All Grade in Main Brook, Main River Academy in Pollard’s Point, Basque Memorial in Red Bay, White Hills Academy in St. Anthony, and St. Lewis Academy in St. Lewis.
