The Straitsview trapper

With a fox tucked under his arm, Harrison Hedderson made his way along the roadside.

At 73 years old, Harrison Hedderson doesn’t let his age slow him down. The Straitsview resident can be found scouring the area checking his traps and snares, the same as when he was a boy.

The Straitsview trapper, likely the last of his kind for the area, was scanning for potential leads.

At 73 years old, Hedderson said he’s been trapping since he was “big enough to set one”, recalling that he’d trap the hills and land from Straitsview to L’Anse aux Meadows.

He’s been working the area so long, that when a National Park was established in L’Anse aux Meadows, Hedderson was permitted to continue trapping within the park’s boundaries.

And don’t let his age fool you. Even though he required a hip replacement in 2008, Hedderson is still quite spry.

He’ll spend his time in the woods trying his hand at fox, coyote, rabbit and muskrat (when they were around).

But that’s only in the fall of the year, after he’s done with the trouting, berry picking and his garden.

So far this year, Harrison has brought home four foxes.

“I enjoy being in the outdoors,” he said. “I’ve been at it so long, what else am I going to do?”

But Hedderson is quick to note, the idea of trapping and snaring is not as popular as it once was.

“You don’t see too many young people at it these days, but when I was a young feller everyone was at it,” he said. “Now, if they sees a fox track, they won’t bother with the traps, they’re off to get the gun.”

But Hedderson has too adjusted to the times, somewhat. He focuses more on snaring than trapping these days.

But when his most recent fox proved to be a little too sly, it was time for the tried and true.

“To be honest it’s the first trap I’ve used in years, but I couldn’t catch him with the snare I had set, so I went back to what I knew worked best,” he said.

With that the Straitsview trapper was underway again, off to check his rabbit slips.
