Two men from this province have been charged in connection with an international child pornography bust.

Scales of justice

Bernard White of St. John’s and Paul Harvey Perham of Clarke’s Beach were both arrested earlier this year.

White first appeared in provincial court in late June and was released on bail shortly afterwards. He is scheduled to be back before a judge on Dec. 9.

The 68-year-old has one conviction on his criminal record — failing to stop at the scene of an accident, from 1989.

The RNC says White was arrested without incident on a warrant by members of the RNC Child Exploitation Unit.

He was located in Toronto with the assistance of the RCMP National Child Exploitation investigators and returned to this province.

He is charged with accessing child pornography and possessing child pornography.

Perham, 43, was arrested Feb. 28 and first appeared in provincial court in Harbour Grace on March 1. He was released on an undertaking and has been in court several times since then. His last court appearance was Oct. 22.

He’s due back in court in Harbour Grace Jan. 7.

The two were arrested was part of Project Spade.

According to The Canadian Press, almost 400 children were rescued from exploitation and hundreds of suspects arrested in an investigation that began in Toronto.

The investigation spanned more than 50 countries.

Those arrested included 108 from Canada, including 50 from Ontario.

The RNC is asking anyone who has any information in relation to this incident or any other incident involving child pornography to contact the RNC at 729-8000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). I
