Re-elected Wabana Mayor Gary Gosine celebrated his campaign win Tuesday night from a hospital bed in St. John’s.
But his wife Debbie Gosine, speaking on her husband’s behalf, was thrilled with the results, given her husband was unable to campaign door-to-door for the past two weeks while awaiting cardiac bypass surgery.
“He had his surgery on Friday. To have everyone out support him like that, it’s unbelievable,” said Gosine, who added the re-election is validation of her husband’s commitment to Bell Island. “He’s always there. They know they can get him 24/7, and he proved it tonight.”
In the near future, she said, Gary’s health is the top priority as he recovers before he returns to the mayor’s chair, she said.
He’s expected to be out of hospital by the end of the week.
Gosine’s 601 votes topped Teresita McCarthy’s 324 and Kay Crane’s 272.
Crane said “you’ve got to listen to the people,” even though she’s disappointed.
“My sincere congratulations to Mayor Gosine,” she said. “It’s a huge victory for him, and in spite of his illness I’m sure he’ll come through with flying colours.”
The unofficial results for councillor were closer than the mayoral race, with one vote separating Linda Skehanes (with 529 votes) from defeated candidate Stan MacDonald (528 votes).
Also elected were Brian Kent (727 votes), Benjamin Warford (699), Donovan Taplin (685), Carol Brown and David Foley (each with 543). Lisa Potter (436) and Glenn Brazil (418) were also defeated.
