Cutting the cake at the 28th annual Accent on Ability dinner held at the Star Hall Aug. 18 are (l-r) president Gerard McGrath, HUB president Jim Kelly and Star public relations officer George Mooney.
For 28 years the Star of the Sea Association has been welcoming the Hub members from St. John’s to Placentia for an Accent on Ability Day. It is a day of relaxation and entertainment as all share in a meal, music, dancing and presentation of gifts.
The day started with a dinner for the visitors and local people served by the Ladies Auxiliary of the Star with assistance from the Festival of Flags staff.
President Gerard McGrath of the Star welcomed everyone and continued the tradition of presenting a plaque to mark the occasion to Hub president, Jim Kelly. Kelly thanked the Star and invited the local people for a return visit to the Hub on October 20th. Star vice-president James Roache expressed thanks to all who had made donations to the event and to the people who helped run it. Councillor Wayne Power Jr. welcomed the visitors to the town and complimented the organizers on a great event.
One attendee, Jackie Collins, was presented with a gift to mark her 28 years attendance at the event. She was accompanied by her mother Minnie Collins. The gift was presented by Star president Gerard McGrath and public relations officer George Mooney. Following this a drawing was held for door prizes and a large number were distributed to the participants.
With music provided by Avalon the group spent the rest of the afternoon dancing and socializing before the visitors got on the buses for their return trip to St. John’s.
