Telegram sports editor Robin Short and sports reporter Brendan McCarthy have been named winners of the American Hockey League’s 2012-13 media award.
The Ellery Awards for outstanding media coverage of the AHL has three categories for newspapers, radio and television.
Short and McCarthy have been named in the newspaper category.
The AHL said in a news release that The Telegram’s writers have provided the St. John’s IceCaps with “superior coverage all year long. The Telegram staffs every home game, provides recaps of every road game and complements its game coverage with regular features and in-depth profile stories on the IceCaps organization.”
The Tele-gram’s managing editor, Kerry Hann, said this is a great award for the publication. “The Telegram sports department does an outstanding job of covering our St. John’s IceCaps and it is always rewarding and satisfying to have those efforts recognized by an organization such as the AHL,” said Hann.
“Robin and Brendan provide in-depth and knowledgeable analysis into all facets of the team that is found nowhere else.
“The fact this is Brendan’s second time winning this award only confirms what our dedicated readers already know, that his insightful commentary is unsurpassed in professional hockey circles.”
Both Short and McCarthy have been covering the AHL for The Telegram since 1991.
