A St. John’s man that police say was the victim of an assault last week died on Sunday and the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is now treating the matter as a homicide investigation.
Police were called to a home on Tessier Place in downtown
St. John’s at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday because of a disturbance. A 46-year-old male was taken to hospital, where he remained until his death on Sunday. The man’s name has not been released.
Two residents of the area who spoke with The Telegram on Sunday said a lot of people frequented the home where the incident occurred on Wednesday. They did not personally know the man who died.
One openly suggested it was a drug house.
The resident heard fights in the vicinity of the house, and said police had visited the home on a number of occasions.
“It’s too bad it took an incident like this to get it to shut down,” said one person who spoke with The Telegram.
“For the past year and a half, there were upwards of 50, 60, 70 people a day just going back and forth, back and forth, getting their fix.”
Before then, Tessier Place was a quiet neighbourhood, according to the resident, who hopes the admittedly unfortunate incident will put an end to alleged illegal activities in the area.
“Since they moved in, whoever they are, a year and a half ago, it’s been non-stop traffic and cabs pulling up all hours of the morning, and women out there fighting and calling each other names. It’s just ridiculous.”
Another resident said there was a lot of traffic coming to-and-from the house, but said the people who lived at the home were quiet and posed no threat to anyone.
“They were fairly quiet. As I said, lots of traffic.”
Police said the initial incident was not a domestic dispute.
No arrests were made as of Sunday evening.
An autopsy is scheduled to take place this morning.
