Eight Canada Post locations in rural Newfoundland are no longer open on Saturdays.
The eight post offices impacted are in Belleoram, Cape Broyle, Carmanville, Englee, English Harbour West, New Harbour, Port au Port, and Sunnyside.
Canada Post spokeswoman Anick Losier said the crown corporation is facing challenges due to more people communicating online. She said this has led to a decrease in traditional mail volumes, less stamp purchases, and fewer visits to post offices.
Compared to 2011, Losier said Canada Post is handling three million fewer pieces of mail per day.
“As an organization that operates solely on the revenue generated by our products and services, we need to look at our costs,” she wrote in an e-mail to The Telegram.
According to Losier, most affected communities were informed about the changes in July, with most Saturday closures coming into effect last month. She said Canada Post is continuing to review its “entire network to find efficiencies, not just Newfoundland and Labrador.”
There are over 200 post offices provincewide, according to Canada Post.
