Fire Chiefs from Springdale and King’s Point receive donations of $5000 dollars a piece from BMO Bank of Montreal in Springdale.
Local businesses recognize efforts of volunteers following blaze
It’s a night that’s still fresh in the minds of many in Springdale – and perhaps most of all, in the minds of the Firemen who responded to the blaze that claimed the Bank of Montreal and Home Hardware buildings on Main Street in that community in January.
The fire burned for hours, and required the response of the Springdale fire department and local area departments as well.
While both the buildings were incinerated in the incident, many praised the heroic efforts of the volunteers in the aftermath, for saving other surrounding buildings, and ensuring there was no loss of life.
That praise has carried over not only among local residents at the grocery stores and coffee shops, but also to the owners of the businesses that were most affected by the fire.
Home Hardware and BMO have each made financial donations to the Springdale Fire Department, and BMO also donated to the King’s Point Fire Department.
The donations, said Carolyn Booth, Senior Vice-president, Atlantic Provinces Division, are in recognition of the brave efforts put forward that night in January.
“The fire departments played an active role in battling and controlling the fire that destroyed the BMO Springdale Branch on January 10,” said Booth. “All firefighters involved demonstrated great courage and knowhow to overcome this fire and make sure no one was injured. It is only fitting for us to support the fire departments financially to thank them and to help them deploy their services when the community needs them, just like we needed them last January.”
Chris Morgan, owner of Springdale Home Hardware, says that the effort made to ensure the surrounding homes in the area of the fire were saved is a testament to the hard work of everyone involved in fighting the blaze.
“It was very heartbreaking to see my business destroyed, but knowing that the nearby homes weren’t destroyed was a blessing because a home contains many memories and irreplaceable mementoes.”
Rennie Normore, Fire Chief with the Springdale fire department says the donations are greatly appreciated, and will go to good use to continue the department’s efforts in serving the people of Springdale and the surrounding area.
“We were contacted and told that Home Hardware and BMO wanted to make a donation to the department,” he said. “Needless to say, we are very appreciative that they would consider doing that, and we certainly want to thank them for it.”
BMO donated $5000 dollars to both the Springdale and King’s Point departments.
Home Hardware contributed $10,000 dollars to the Springdale department.
Both companies also recognized the efforts of the South Brook fire department who also had members on the scene.
The fire was the largest structural fire in Springdale’s history, says Normore, and his department is pleased that their efforts, and the efforts of the surrounding departments, were available when needed.
