Peter Penashue, MP for Labrador and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs has resigned.

Penashue said the resignation is a result of the Elections Canada investigation into spending on his campaign during the last federal election.

Penashue says the campaign accepted “ineligible donations.”

He says he will run for re-election in a byelection, to be set by the Prime Minister.

Here is the statement, in its entirety:

“Due to mistakes that were made by an inexperienced volunteer in filing the Elections Canada return from the last campaign, I appointed a new Official Agent to work with Elections Canada to make any needed amendments to my campaign return.

During the examination we became aware that there were ineligible donations accepted by the former Official Agent.

Although I was unaware of the inaccuracies in the return, I believe I must be accountable to the people who elected me and therefore I am stepping down as the Member of Parliament for Labrador and will seek re-election through a by-election.  I will also be stepping down as Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and President of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada.

My record as Member of Parliament for Labrador and Minister in Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Conservative government over the past two years is one that I am very proud of.

I have worked to secure federal support for the development of Muskrat Falls, which will lead to $1.9 billion for our economy and thousands of jobs for Labrador.  I have also worked with government and private industry to increase internet speed in Labrador, and delivered federal funding to pave the Trans-Labrador Highway.

There is much more to do for the people of Labrador, including protecting our way of life.  We have scrapped the long-gun registry despite the efforts of the NDP and Liberals to keep it, and now we must continue to fight to defend the seal hunt against the NDP and Liberal parliamentarians who want to ban it.  I will also continue to lead the defence of the polar bear hunt, something that is very important to Labradorians.

In the by-election I will be asking the people of Labrador to re-elect me so that I can continue to deliver for Labrador.”

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has issued the following statement:

“The Honourable Minister Denis Lebel, currently the Minister responsible for Transport, Infrastructure and Communities and of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, will assume responsibility for Intergovernmental Affairs and President of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada.

“Minister Lebel is now also responsible for the overall management and coherence of relations with provincial and territorial governments and for strengthening Canadian unity.”

“I would like to thank Mr. Penashue for his service as Minister and to the people of Labrador.”

I have little faith in anything this Conservative is saying especially knowing that this is also the very same Conservative who voted against Bill C-400 to deal with the shortage of affordable housing despite the fact there is a big problem with not enough affordable housing which is a very important issue. The Liberal Party of Canada and the NDP are starting to look like a much better choice for the people but that's just my opinion.

Good Riddance! People of Labrador remember the past and send the CONS a stern message. No more CONS!

You should have resigned much sooner than two years later, and gone with a little bit of self-respect, rather than spread the blame on others. Stop trying to convince people of your lack of knowledge, as well as exaggerating your achievements. We have minds of our own. Don't bother looking for re-election. Who is going to vote for someone they can't trust? Then again, there are not too many politicians who you can trust.

Hopefully the people of Labrador will fail to re-elect Penashue back in to government. While he was elected as the member for Labrador, as the minister for both Newfoundland AND Labrador he was weaker than weak, doing absolutely nothing for Newfoundland. Even without having a member elected to the gogernment, it we will be no worse than it is now and there may be a better time for aa the province. As well, the wording of his statement says that without him there, we would not have received money for either Muskrat or the TLC.

He probably resigned to avoid any possibility of prosecution??? No problem if not re-elected as he can be a Chief or Contractor of one of the Indian Bands and get a possible pay raise and not have to account for any of the spending practices. Oh maybe I should not have said that because Randy was forced out for being truthful but said something that was not Politically Correct. Good Ridance!

Peter Penashue should have resigned long ago. He never had any intention of doing the right thing. His statement that he is doing the right thing now is disingenuous at best. Obviously something happened to push him to this decision. If the voters put him back in office (I hope not) then they deserve them. Come on people, condier carefully if you can live with this man representing you. Send a message - no more corrupt politicians!

Yet another prime example of the corruption in the Conservative Govt. How about we do another Provincial Election right now and get these idiots out of power.

Hmmm. A resignation out of the blue. Wonder if he also took a few days vacation to ' reflect ' prior to his decision ?.

The man was totally in over his head. At the best of times he looked like a deer caught in a headlight. Dazed at best. Response when asked a question....whaaaath? Now if some local politicians would follow his lead, starting with Kathy. Maybe the PC party can rebuild in time for the next election. They would have a very good chance to form the next government considering the alternative....Lorraine or Dwight.
