The former Spruce Trails Cross-Country Ski Association and related trails located on Highway 410 Baie Verte have had little or no use during the past several years and the association was disbanded. The trails had become overgrown in some places and most of the trail markers were missing. With the help of the Dorset Trail Tourism Association, volunteers Glenn Moss and Jim Shave have worked throughout the winter months to prepare the trails for use again. However, the trails have been marked and cleared for snow shoeing, not skiing, as they were before. The steps to the hut have been replaced and new markers have also been placed around the trails. Pocket maps are also available at the start so that users know where they are and the distances travelled. The trails were never really suitable for cross-country skiing and with the growing popularity of snowshoeing the “new” trails are an excellent fit for the area. The Dorset Trail Tourism Association hopes to use the trails and hut for a “Hot Dog Tour” for families and individuals during the winter SHIVER event to be held later this month. The trails are unregulated and therefore people using the trails do so at their own risk. If you would like more information on the trails please phone Jim at 532-4592 or Glenn at 532-4265.
