Gary Gerard Hoskins was a 29-year-old Roman Catholic priest in Stephenville when he invited a 17-year-old boy back to his home after mass on the morning of July 25, 1985.
According to facts heard in court when he entered the guilty plea in 1987, Hoskins touched the teenager in a sexual manner after some general conversation with him.
The boy told his parents, who confronted Hoskins. Hoskins told the parents he had a problem with young boys and had lost control of himself with their son.
He was sentenced to three months in prison and given two years of probation. His lawyer had asked for a conditional discharge, but the sentence was later upheld in the Newfoundland Court of Appeal.
Now, two more charges of sexual assault have been filed against Hoskins at provincial court in Stephenville. According to the latest court documents, the alleged offences happened in or around Stephenville between Jan. 1, 1984 and Dec. 31, 1986.
Hoskins, who is now 55, has not yet entered pleas to the most recent charges and has had his next court date scheduled for March 25.
According to Sylvia’s Site, a blog following sexual abuse matters involving the Roman Catholic Church, there is no record of Hoskins being a clergy member in the Canadian Roman Catholic Church directory since 1997.
