Dear Editor:It is time for Premier Danny Williams to change Newfoundland and Labrador's dependence on the oil and gas industry.Yes, we are finally a "have" province, but is it worth the risk? The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is a tremendous ecological disaster.
It can happen here.
The damage done to the Earth is bound to reach around the planet before it is over.
The loss of animal life, sea life and plant life will be extreme.
We would be devastated here if such a spill occurred off our shores.
I am sure that taking oil from the seabed has other risks as well, such as putting more strain on the fault lines. The recent earthquake in Ottawa should be such an indicator.
What are all the risks involved with seabed drilling?
This has not been made public, to my knowledge.
These oil companies do not care about us or the environment. What are they doing off our coastlines?
How do we know they are not covering up risks or damage?
They only care about making money off our natural resources.
What will this cost us in the end?
Our animal life? Our sea life? Our coastline?
We have to demand that this ancient energy means of oil and gas use be limited and eventually phased out.
Other safer energy technologies do exist but are kept from us by greedy oil dictators who lead us to believe that we can only run on their energy.
Please, Premier Williams, wake up and let's change our province to lead the way to a safer future.
