The Springdale Town Council has partnered with Life Unlimited For Older Adults to begin the process of seeking Age-Friendly Communities designation for the community.
To advance this initiative, Leo Bonnell, chair, Provincial Advisory Council on Aging and Seniors, and vice chair, Random Age-Friendly Communities was invited to make a presentation at a council meeting on January 11.
The presentation focused on the history of the Age-Friendly Communities framework, a description of the criteria to be met, and the process that must be followed. This is a world wide undertaking that was developed by the World Health Organization, and embraced by Canada.
It complies with the provincial Healthy Aging Policy Framework. The criteria are specific, from well-maintained roads and sidewalks to diverse health services and strong recreational supports for all ages in the community. Achieving Age-Friendly status is a 5-step process which involves the entire community.
The first step is to form a committee consisting of community minded citizens who bring a wide variety of experience to guide the process of the community to becoming more age-friendly.
This is where the Town Council and LUFOA will start.
