Shortly after 7 p.m. on Feb. 3, residents of Baie Verte noticed flames coming from the fire detachment. A number of residences around the fire hall were evacuated while firefighters tried to battle the blaze. Residents were allowed to return home later. Fire crews from Ming's Bight, Fleur de Lys, Seal Cove, Pacquet and La Scie attended the fire, which took roughly two hours to bring under control. The Baie Verte Fire Department was destroyed, and a private structure adjacent to the department was also damaged. Fire investigators and the RCMP are on the scene investigating the cause of the fire. Another fire in November destroyed the volunteer fire department's "smokehouse," a wooden structure used to train firefighters in how to navigate smoke-filled buildings.
