Five-year-old cuts hair for good cause

Sometimes TV shows can inspire someone to do the right thing.

And a certain television show titled Life's Little Miracles did just that for five-year-old Seal Cove resident Megan Rice.

"She used to watch it with me and say 'mommy, I wish I could do something to help those kids who are sick,'" said mother Dorothy Rice.

Life's Little Miracles is a TV series that takes viewers into the centre of Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children.

And while watching the show with her mother one day, Megan realized that one way of helping those sick children was to cut off her hair, so it could be made into hairpieces.

Megan cut off 11 inches and donated it to Locks of Love, a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children suffering from long-term medical hair loss.

"That was the first time she actually had a real haircut. Before it was always trimming," said Ms. Rice.

When Megan approached her mother and said she wanted to cut her hair, Ms. Rice was a little surprised, but couldn't say no.

"It was so long and curly, I really didn't want her to cut her hair because it looked so beautiful long, but when she told me the reason, I said 'my love if that's what you want to do, you can do it,"' said Ms. Rice. "I couldn't say no to her."

And because of Megan's noble gesture, her mother said she's proud of her daughter and hopes it inspires other children.

"I hope more children to do the same, because it could help out a lot of kids," said Ms. Rice.

When asked why she cut her hair, the five-year-old wasn't reluctant.

"Because it's the proper thing," she said. "It's going to them and I'm happy for them."
