CAO looking towards moving Springdale forward

For former principal of Indian River High Rick LeDrew, it's all about moving the Town of Springdale forward.

The new chief administrative officer, who once was a teacher and principal for a combined 31 years, is looking forward to the learning curve that comes with the job, but also a chance to manage the town towards future success.

For former principal of Indian River High Rick LeDrew, it's all about moving the Town of Springdale forward.

The new chief administrative officer, who once was a teacher and principal for a combined 31 years, is looking forward to the learning curve that comes with the job, but also a chance to manage the town towards future success.

"I'm not ready to go to the rocking chair just yet," he said while laughing. "I still feel I'm young and energetic, and I feel I can bring a lot to this position."

Mr. LeDrew said his management skills are some of his top qualities he will be bringing to the table.

"I bring a whole set of experiences dealing with the public, managerial skills and conflict resolution," he said. "From a management perspective, management skills are transferable, you don't lose management skills from moving from one management job to another.

"I can bring a team approach and I'll work closely with council and the staff, to move the town forward," he said.

The new CAO said there's not any single issue in particular on his radar, but he's eager to know what's on the minds of residents.

"One of the things that I've done with a position I've assumed is to do an evaluation," he said. "In the short term there will be no changes, I'm just learning and that will be counter-productive I believe to the town."

The notion to hire a CAO has been in the works for roughly two years, said Mayor Harvey Tizzard. But filling the position with the right person has been challenging.

"We were looking for someone with leadership skills who would lead this town forward. We felt that Rick is the right person, knowing his ability and what he's done for this town over the years," said Mr. Tizzard.

The mayor acknowledged there will be a learning process to the position, but in a matter of months, he's confident Mr. LeDrew will have a full grasp of the role.

"He's got a great staff behind him," said Mr. Tizzard, referring to the assistance Mr. LeDrew will get from his colleagues.

One area the mayor knows Mr. LeDrew will excel in is getting new businesses to open up shop in Springdale.

"We need someone to get out there, meet the business people, and try to attract more business. He knows what the town needs, and by having someone with his qualifications, we'll have no problem getting new business," said Mr. Tizzard.
