Port aux Basques girl makes amazing miniatures

Ten-year-old Katie Cox isn’t one to be stuck playing on the iPad.

She does have an iPad, but she says instead of games, she mostly uses it to watch how-to videos on YouTube.

Katie has been crafting all sorts of creations for the past five years. She uses the objects she creates as accessories for her Barbies and dolls.

“I have an American Girl Doll,” said Katie. “I only bought the girl and the bed but everything else I made.”

Katie and her grandmother Phyllis Cox dropped by The Gulf News office with a selection of Katie’s crafts. Among them was a Barbie-sized rocking chair fashioned out of drinking straws, and a concession stand complete with tiny hot dogs, corn dogs, cotton candy and a soda fountain.

For her miniatures, she uses whatever she can find around the house as materials: cardboard, fabric, toothpicks and beads are the main ingredients.

“She also sews,” said Katie’s grandmother. “She got her own sewing machine for Christmas.”

Cox said Katie comes from a long line of crafters, and she does what she can to encourage her granddaughter’s creativity, including providing supplies.

“Kids say today there’s nothing to do and they’re bored, but if they were to take up some of the old fashioned things they did years ago, they’d be better off,” she said.

Katie is also learning to quilt – a skill her other grandmother has been showing her. She has already made three baby-sized quilts for newborns in her family.

When it comes to her miniature craft creations, Katie said her favorite is a vending machine she made out of an empty tissue box.

“I cut up the spiral from a notebook,” she said. “Each screw has a different snack.”

She finished it off with a light installed in the top of the machine.

Her miniatures are also a hit with her friends.

“Sometimes they’ll come over and whenever we play Barbies, they always want to use the things I made because you can’t buy them.”
